Okay, so I have a bunch of kids, and through years of putting in the blood sweat and tears, I’ve come up with a few tips to share … Enjoy!
Time will tell if we give it some time. I know it’s a cliché but really, time is the greatest gift you can bestow upon your little ones. They will thrive, relish and bask under the time you give them – even if it means listening to the whole 30 minute saga about who did what to who at school today (again) – it’s worth lending your ear to your kid.
- Don’t sweat the small stuff
Does it really matter who didn’t put the lid on the milk bottle tightly enough? Or who keeps using the whole roll of paper towels within the space of a few hours? Or who took your car keys while you were asleep to treat his friends to a joy ride? Erm … Okay, so some things matter; but choose your battles wisely or you will end up in the nut-house.
- Laundry – Argh!
When you have as many kids as I do, teach them to wash clothes as soon as they are old enough. We’re not talking child slavery here, but when your children decide to change clothes and throw each item in the dirty wash five million times a day – getting them their own wash basket slows this process down like magic.
- No really, it wasn’t me …
Funnily enough, nobody around here takes responsibility for anything much really. What do you do when you can’t get to the bottom of who done what? I’m still working that one out, but for now if the issue at hand involves anything remotely tangible, it’s confiscated.
- Have fun!
Another cliché; they grow so fast. Enjoy your little ones as much as you can, they will only want to hold your hand for so long. Hold that little hand and live in the moment, for yesterday’s come too quickly.
